Nude Photography

This can be the full image of a person or only showing a part of the body. Just like portrait photography, you can choose from a variety of locations and poses.

The photographer and the model can collaborate together for stunning, creative images, preferably an artistic approach, classy and stylishly done.

A great photograph can typically depend on:

  • The camera equipment.
  • The location and lighting.
  • How well the model and photographer work together.
  • The model being comfortable and open with the idea.

Photography Tips.

Be Prepared:

Be prepared and have some ideas of what you're trying to achieve. If you are not prepared for a nude photography shoot, it can leave you and the model feeling uncomfortable and exposed.

Get some magazines or go online to get some ideas for a clean, classy picture. Have any props you might want to use available. Maybe you want just a little jewelry, a tie, a trench coat, gloves, or a pair of high heel shoes. How will you want hair and makeup?

In most cases, a warm room is practical. This makes posing more relaxed versus a tense look to the picture.

Black and White or Color?

Personally I think black & white photography adds a level of elegance, beauty, and sensuality to both the male or female model.

I believe color works if used minimally. For instance; a white room with a white bed and white sheets, the rest of the color coming from the model, such as hair or lipstick.

I feel a cluttered space, too many props, and too much color takes away from a nice picture of someone’s body and turns it into something else all together. So don’t overdo it.

Up Close and Personal?

For the most part, stand back and let the model have some personal space. This will also help achieve a look and feel of being relaxed and at ease.

Add a Little Mystery to the Shot.

You don’t always have to take a full frontal view of your subject. They can be lying on their stomach, sitting with their back to the camera, head slightly turned, etc.

Not all pictures have to show a lot of skin either. Models can use their hands, arms, a shirt to cover up. Sometimes – less is more.

Practice and get to know what works for the type of picture you are trying to get.

What Else Can You Do?

Read and study what others are doing. Pick up books on the subject. Get out on the internet and look around and study what other photographers are doing. Ashley Karyl writes a book; the first ebook of this kind, on how you can photograph nudes like the professionals do.

How to Photograph NudesHow to Photograph Nudes Like A Professional is an essential companion to have around if you are someone wanting to learn more about nude photography. The information contained within the pages of the book are invaluable and well written.

Final Thoughts.

Keep it fun and relaxed. You can even play music to relax the atmosphere. Make your space comfortable and clean. Tell a joke or two, as long as you know you’ll get a laugh.

Keep a robe or a blanket handy for your subject to cover up with in between shots. Let them know you are thinking of their comfort.

If you’re just starting out, keep it simple and have everything you need so no one is standing around. Start with simple poses and know how the lighting works with the shots you’re trying to get.
