The Art of Digital Photography
Computers and cellular phones, mobility and microchips – these are some of the trademarks of our world today.
We live in a world continually changed by technology. Over time we have used various methods to capture life and freezing time. One of those changes is photography and the method in which we capture those moments of our lives and the artwork we create.
We have moved from film photography to digital photography. New technology is continually being developed to make the art of digital photography easier and more fun.
However, you should know the art of digital photography is not as simple as point and shoot. Did you know digital art is accepted in many galleries today?
Digital Art - Skills and Knowledge
The art of digital photography does require some skills and knowledge to achieve the end results. You may think all you need to do is edit your digital photograph and you have your digital artwork.
For some a simple editing is all that is required, you may want a simple piece of art that you created to hang on the wall.
For others simplicity is not enough. They want great pieces of art hanging on the wall - theirs and the walls of others as well.
Many people do not understand how much work editing can be. We can say that technology has reached a level where all someone needs to do is practically nothing in order to achieve a great photograph or piece of digital artwork - but - you need to know how to use the tools properly in order to do that.
Digital Art - What you Need
Time.
We cannot expect to be an instant success either in digital photography or creating art from our digital photography.
You need time to learn about it. Once you've taught yourself the basics of digital photography, think about further educating yourself with some classes.
Think about getting a graphics programs - talk to people you know who do some digital art, look on the internet to compare different software.
Here are just a few programs to look at, but the list is great:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Corel Painter X
- ArtRage
- Twisted Brush
See what kinds of classes are offered at your local community college, a local camera store, and see what is offered online.
You may also find some useful information in the Resource section of the website.
Talent.
It helps if we have a bit of inherent talent and to have an eye for what would make a great piece of digital art and a great photograph.
If we don't, we end up being mediocre. That being said, with proper training/classes you can enhance and sharpen your skills.
Money.
As I noted above you will need the proper tools in order to be successful in the art of digital photography. This does mean; if you are serious, you will eventually need to invest in your future.
There are classes to take and equipment to purchase. Along with the few graphics programs I mention above, some other pieces of equipment you may think about are:
- Wacom tablet
- A good computer and monitor
If you are not in a position to buy new, look on ebay or craigslist for used items that are still in good condition. If you go this route, be very selective and get the most for your money.
Critiques.
If you have decided to take some classes, your instructor and classmates will help critique your work.
If; for whatever reason, you have not taken classes and are starting this process on your own, look for some websites to join.
Many of these websites are free. They are a place where you can submit your digital artwork and have other members of the website critique your work.
A great place to look into is Renderosity.com. Renderosity's online community are members who have a passion for digital art and helping others learn to grow in digital art.
You will enjoy participating and interacting with the members. This online community has grown into a family community. Renderosity's members are very interactive community within the forums and chats.
Renderosity offers free content and a marketplace for digital products and 3D models. Membership is FREE and you will also find many resources listed on the Renderosity website.
You can also think about submitting your digital artwork in contests. There are many sites where submission to the contest is free. Although some do charge a small fee.
Once you have invested money in the art of digital photography, there's no turning back. You will get hooked, even if it turns out to be just for yourself and family to share in your digital art.
The art of digital photography may seem like it requires a lot. However, in the long run, you will be happy with the choice you've made.
